GREENSBORO, N.C. – Eight Georgia Tech track & field athletes have been named to the 2008 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Track & Field Teams, as announced by Commissioner John D. Swofford Friday.
Four men – E.C. Gibbs, David Herren, Matt Hickey and Billy Mateker – and four women – Alana Clooten, Kimery Hern, Jennifer Sims and Joanna Wright – were recognized for their impressive seasons in and out of the classroom.
Gibbs, Mateker and Sims each earned the honor for the second time in their careers.
ACC Men’s Champion Florida State posted eight honorees on this year’s team. NC State followed with seven members while Duke and NC State had five members. The Yellow Jackets, North Carolina and Virginia each secured four spots. Maryland and Boston College notched three honorees, followed by Wake Forest and Clemson with two honorees each. The 43-man team was rounded out by Virginia Tech with one member.
On the women’s side, Virginia Tech led all conference schools with eight selections to the team. Boston College snagged six members, while five teams placed four student- athletes on the team, including; the Yellow Jackets, Florida State and North Carolina. Clemson, Maryland and Virginia each had three honorees while Duke, Wake Forest and Miami each had two. North Carolina State rounded out the team with one selection.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete mush have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
