ATLANTA – Ed Nelson, a 6-7, 250-pound forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Jawad Williams, a 6-9, 205-pound forward from Cleveland, Ohio were named ACC CO-Rookies of the Week. Nelson is the second Tech player in as many weeks to earn the honor, following 7-foot center Luke Schenscher.
Nelson averaged averaged 13 points, 4.5 rebounds and shot 63 percent from the field (10-for-16) in Georgia Tech’s two games last week. Nelson helped the Yellow Jackets to a 74-50 victory at Clemson with nine points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field, five rebounds and two steals. Nelson’s interior defense limited Clemson post players Chris Hobbs and Ray Henderson to just three field goals between them. Against top-ranked Duke, Nelson had 17 points and four rebounds. He went 6-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line.
Nelson is the top freshmen rebounder in the ACC this season with 6.8 per game, and averages 8.5 points per game. He has shot 52.9 percent from the floor in ACC games, and 49.7 percent overall.
Williams played well off the bench in Carolina’s two losses last week. Against the third-ranked Terrapins Sunday, he had a season-high 21 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Earlier in the week against 16th-ranked Wake Forest, Williams scored six points and pulled down six rebounds. In 52 minutes of action during the week Williams committed just one turnover.
