The Georgia Tech women’s swimming and diving team stands in eighth place with 74 points following the end of the first day of the 23rd annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.
The two-time defending champion North Carolina Tar Heels lead after the first day of action scoring 204 points, leading second-place Florida State who scored 195 points. Virginia stands in third place after the first day with 181 points while Clemson is fourth (114) followed by NC State (99), Maryland (94), Duke (87).
Tech’s top performances of the day occurred in the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay. The 200 free relay team of Anna Saum, Jenny Lentz, Moeko Wallis and Sara Gilli finished in fifth place and set a school record with a time of 1:35.40. In the 400 medley relay, the team of Saum, Lentz, Wallis and Cara DeVinny recorded a school record with a time of 3:51.00, which was good for sixth place.
Individually, DeVinny led the Yellow Jackets, finishing in seventh place in the 200 Individual Medley in a time of 2:04.87. She was followed in the event by Lisa Hancock, who swam in a time of 2:08.75 and finished in 16th place, while Ashley Skala recorded a time of 2:13.47 to finish in 24th place in the bonus consolations.
Michelle Maguire set a school record in the 500 freestyle posting a time of 4:57.68 to finish in 19th place. In the 50 freestyle, Wallis finished in 19th place, recording a time of 24.07. In the 1 meter diving competition, Amy Sutton finished in 10th place with a score of 223.80.
Action will continue tomorrow at the ACC Championships with the preliminaries starting at 11 a.m. and the finals beginning at 7 p.m. in the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
