THE FLATS – Coming off a 2-0 week of action, including a victory over a top 25 opponent, Georgia Tech women’s tennis collected a pair of weekly conference honors. Valeriya Deminova was tabbed ACC Co-Player of the Week and Jeanette Lin was named ACC Freshman of the Week.
Deminova went undefeated on the week, posting a 4-0 mark between singles and doubles action. The freshman opened the week helping the Jackets clinch the doubles point against Georgia State with doubles partner Victoria Flores. Deminova then collected a hard-fought singles win on court three to help lift the Jackets to victory over the Panthers. Last Sunday, Deminova and Flores pocketed Tech’s only doubles win against Northwestern and was paramount in helping the Jackets stage a comeback against the No. 11 Wildcats in singles play. Competing at the four seed, Deminova gave Tech a 3-1 lead, downing Carolina Pozo, 6-2, 6-2. On the season, Deminova is 3-1 in dual singles action and 4-2 in dual doubles play.
Against Georgia State, Lin cruised to a straight-set victory on court two, 6-0, 6-2, to setup a successful week of action for the freshman. Two days later, Lin clinched Tech’s upset win over No. 11 Northwestern. After the Jackets dropped the doubles point, Tech captured five singles wins to secure the comeback victory. Leading 3-2 in the match, Tech’s deciding win came from court two where Lin uprooted No. 72 Julie Byrne to clinch the match, 7-5, 6-3.
The Jackets return to action this weekend, traveling to No. 1 Georgia on Saturday before hosting Pittsburgh to open ACC play on Sunday.
