PHILADELPHIA – Led by a second-place finish in the collegiate long jump by junior Jessica DeFreitas, the Georgia Tech women’s track and field team enjoyed a solid first day of competition at the 108th Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
DeFreitas jumped 19’04.00″ to earn the runner-up finish, while senior teammate Mishanta Reyes placed eighth in the event with a mark of 18’05.00″.
The 4×100-meter relay team of DeFreitas, sophomore Amandi Rhett, senior Alisha McClinton and freshman Dana Rogers placed fourth in their heat with a time of 46.97. The team is listed as an alternate for the College Championship 4×100, which will be run at 12:40 p.m. Friday.
Tech’s other top-10 finish came from senior Jennifer Ledbetter, the ACC high jump champion, who placed sixth in that event, as she cleared 5’03.75″.
In other action, senior Dana Hall was 15th in the shot put with a toss of 42’06.00″, and senior Angela Levens was 22nd in the hammer throw with a mark of 162’02.00″.
The Jackets return to action Friday and are slated to compete in the shuttle hurdle relay. McClinton will run in the 100 hurdles, and Rhett is set to go in the 100. The Tech men’s team will also open competition at the prestigious meet tomorrow.
