BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Monique Pate finished seventh in the pentathlon on day one of the ACC Championships Thursday at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. to earn Georgia Tech two team points in the competition. She totaled a season-best 3,420 points over the five events.
Pate’s best performances on the day were a third-place showing in the shot put (10.56m; 34-7¾) and a sixth-place finish in the high jump (1.59m; 5-2½), which propelled her into the top 10.
Maryland’s Thea LaFond took first in the pentathlon with 4,111 points. Duke’s Miray Seward took second with 3,784 points and Tory Kemp of North Carolina wrapped up the top three finishers with 3,730 points.
Georgia Tech freshman Donjhae Jones placed ninth with a season-best score of 3,385 points and just missed earning team points as only the top eight finishers earn points toward the team’s overall score.
Jones took second in her best event -the long jump – with a distance of 5.72m (18-9¼).
Also for the Jackets, sophomore Alex Braxton placed 10th with 3,378 points and freshman Kamilah Bakari took 15th with 3,197 points.
The Jackets continue action at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at 11 a.m. and will continue through the early evening. Highlights will include the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon, finals in seven field events, as well as the finals in both the men’s and women’s 5,000-meter runs, and the men’s and women’s distance medley relays.
