Cross Country Set For Florida Invite

Sept. 19, 2014

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech cross country team travels south to Gainesville, Fla. this weekend for the Florida Mountain Dew Invitational. The men’s 8K begins at 7:55 a.m. and the women’s 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. Heading into the meet, the men’s team is ranked No. 9 in the South Region in the most recent USTFCCCA poll.

The Yellow Jacket men’s cross country team opened the 2014 season in strong fashion with victories over Georgia and Mercer at the UGA Invite. The Georgia Tech women defeated Mercer 15-49, but narrowly fell to the Bulldogs, 25-30, in the season opener.

Tech benefitted from standout individual performances from seniors Jeremy Greenwald and Katie Townsend. Greenwald’s time of 25:53 secured first place in the men’s 8K competition. Katie Townsend led the women’s team with a 5K time of 18:19. Both performances garnered conference-wide recognition as Greenwald was named ACC Male Co-Performer of the Week and Townsend was honored as ACC Female Performer of the Week.

Saturday’s invitational marks the first time the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in The Sunshine State since the 2012 NCAA South Regionals. The men’s team will compete in a 27-team field whereas the women’s team will be one of 29 teams racing on Saturday morning.
