THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to compete in the 2013 ACC Championships at Beeson Park in Kernersville, N.C. hosted by Wake Forest. The men’s 8k race will start at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s 6k competition at 11 a.m.
On the men’s side, Syracuse enters Friday’s competition as the highest ranked ACC team in the weekly USTFCCCA poll at No. 14 nationally. North Carolina is 18th and Notre Dame 23rd.
The women’s race features five ranked teams. Florida State enters the championship as the nation’s fifth-ranked team. The Seminoles are followed by Virginia at No. 10, Syracuse 19th, Notre Dame 22nd and Boston College 27th.
The Yellow Jacket men are coming off a 32nd-place finish out of 52 teams at the Pre-National Invitational, while the women placed 11th out of 35 teams.
The men have been led by a trio of Jackets in Jeremy Greenwald, Shawn Roberts and Alec Clifford. Roberts led Tech at the Pre-National meet with a 99th-place finish out of 359 runners.
The women are paced by Katie Townsend, who has finished first for Tech in every meet she competed in this season. She finished the Pre-National course in 53rd out of 227 competitors.
Last year, both the men’s and women’s teams finished ninth. Townsend was the top finisher for the Tech women, running the 6K in a career-best time of 21:58 for 46th place. Roberts led the men and logged a time of 25:14 for 51st place in the 8K.
