THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country earned No. 7 and 10 rankings in the preseason South Region rankings, the USTFCCCA announced this week.
The women jumped three spots from their final 2016 ranking of 13 while the men start exactly where they finished a year ago. The preseason poll this season represents a jump for both teams to begin the year, with the men slotted at No. 8 and the women at No. 12.
The South Region consists of some of the toughest competition in the country with Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama, Vanderbilt and Florida State all battling for spots in the standings.
The Yellow Jackets look to start their season strong when they kick off the year at the Jacksonville State Opener on Friday, Sept. 1. The women are currently slated for a 4K event at 6 p.m., followed shortly by the men’s 5K event beginning at 6:40 p.m.
The women’s team returns junior Amy Ruiz, junior Mary Prouty and sophomore Mary Claire Solomon. Ruiz finished as the top Jacket in the most meets last season with Prouty right behind as the top finisher twice.
The men’s team returns senior Nahom Solomon, sophomore Frank Pittman and junior Mitchell Sanders. Solomon was the top Jacket in all but one meet in 2016 while Pittman was two-time ACC Player of the Week.
