THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech cross country team will travel to Bishop, Ga. to open the 2014 season at the UGA Invite on Saturday at the UGA Equestrian Complex. The men’s 8K competition begins at 8 a.m. and the women 5K race starts at 8:45 a.m.
The Yellow Jackets have opened their last five seasons at the UGA Invite and it will be their only meet in Georgia this season. Last season at the UGA Invite, Jeremy Greenwald finished third of 63 runners to lead the Tech men’s team and Katie Townsend took third out of 74 runners to lead the Tech women.
Townsend, who finished first for Georgia Tech in all six meets she ran in, returns for the women. There is a solid mix of upperclassmen in Caroline Kissel, Allison Brackin, Kelly Meyer and Laura Nelson, along with sophomores Melissa Fairey and Hayley Keadey, who all ran big personal bests in the 5,000 meters last track season.
The men’s cross country team sees the return of Brandon Lasater and Greenwald, who both earned NCAA South All-Region honors last season. The last time the Tech men placed at least two members on the All-Region team was in 2001.
Heading into the opening weekend, the men’s team is ranked ninth in the South Region according to the latest USTFCCCA poll.
