THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech cross country team will travel the 63 miles from Atlanta to Bishop, Ga. to open the 2013 season in the UGA Invite on Saturday at the UGA Equestrian Complex. The men’s 8K competition begins at 8 a.m. and the women 5K race starts at 8:45 a.m.
The Yellow Jackets have opened their last four seasons at the UGA Invite and it will be their first of three meets in the state of Georgia for Tech this season.
Joining Georgia Tech on the course are Mercer University, Emmanuel College and the host Bulldogs. Last season, the men’s cross country team raced to a second place finish at the UGA Invite, while the women took also took second after finishing in fifth place the year prior.
The women’s team returns junior Katie Townsend, the top finisher for the Jackets in all six meets last year, along with sophomores Caroline Kissel and Kaylee Isaacs. The two underclassmen both put together successful seasons in 2012, competing for Tech in the NCAA South Regional meet.
The men’s cross country team sees the return of its top two finishers in senior Alec Clifford and junior Jeremy Greenwald. Greenwald was the top finisher for Georgia Tech in last year’s UGA Cross Country Invitational.
