THE FLATS – Junior forward Charles Mitchell had 18 points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes of play, while senior center Demarco Cox added 25 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes Saturday as Georgia Tech conducted its annual Blue-Gold intrasquad game at McCamish Pavilion.
The Yellow Jackets played four 10-minute periods, switching some players between teams in different periods. It was the first public competition for Tech after three weeks of pre-season practice. The Jackets host Clayton State for an exhibition game on Friday, Nov. 7, then open the regular season Nov. 14 at home against Georgia.
Mitchell hit 8-of-11 shots from the floor, while Cox went 9-for-17. Robert Sampson scored 10 points in 27 minutes, while Tech’s other two post players, freshmen Ben Lammers and Abdoulaye Gueye, combined for 11 points in 56 minutes.
Red-shirt freshman point guard Travis Jorgenson played the first two periods but was held out of the last two as a precaution as he continues to get back to 100 percent after injuring his knee in game 4 of last year. South Florida Josh Heath played 37 minutes (five assists, two turnovers, no points), while Corey Heyward logged 31 minutes (7 points, 1 assist).
The teams combined for 22 assists on 48 field goals and 17 turnovers. The Gold team was a perfect 20-for-20 from the free throw line, while the Blue team was 6-for-16.
