City Sewer Project To Re-route Georgia Tech Football Traffic

ATLANTA – Traffic around Bobby Dodd Stadium will be re-routed beginning Aug. 28 due to the final phase of a City of Atlanta sewer project. The construction will affect traffic for Georgia Tech home football games, as well as the flow of traffic around the stadium and the east side of campus for the next year.

Construction for Phase III of the Orme Street Combined Trunk Relief Sewer — originally named for Orme Street, which is now known as Techwood Drive — is slated to begin in late August and continue through January 2002.

The project is a three-phase city of Atlanta operation to improve and update this sewer system. Phases I and II were completed in 1997 and stopped at Fourth and Fowler streets. Phase III runs through the eastern part of the campus: Brittain Drive, east and underground at Bobby Dodd Way, south under Techwood Drive, across North Avenue and ending at Merritts Avenue. For the duration of the project, Brittain Drive and the intersection of Fowler and Fourth streets will be closed, and Fowler (west of Peters Parking Deck) will become a two-way street. In addition, the intersection of Bobby Dodd Way and Brittain Drive will be closed to vehicles for a short period but will not be closed to pedestrian traffic.

According to Fred Dolder, senior project manager of the Office of Facilities Design and Construction, “mobilization” will begin at the end of August. “That’s when the contractor will bring equipment on site, put up fences and assume the area they will be working in,” he said.

Brittain Drive and the intersection of Fowler, Fourth and Brittain will close on Aug. 28. The street closings will affect east campus traffic as well as Peters Parking Deck for the 2000 football season.

The traffic to Peters Parking Deck should take Atlantic Drive south of 10th Street. Atlantic turns into Fourth and traffic should proceed on Fourth to the Peters Deck. Traffic should enter the Lower Deck off Fourth Street (a new entrance) and enter the Upper Deck entrance off Fowler.

Pedestrian traffic will also be affected by the construction project. Pedestrians from the Alexander Memorial Coliseum lot and O’Keefe Gym lots and east side general parking areas should follow Techwood Drive to the stadium. Those on Fowler Street north of Fourth Street can take Fowler to Fifth Street, go east on Fifth and then south on Techwood to the stadium. Fowler Street from Fourth Street to Bobby Dodd Way will be a two-way street with no parking during this time. Those parking on the north side of campus and west of Fowler should avoid using Fowler as a walk route if possible.

Those with recreation vehicles and high-top vans who have been assigned parking passes to Brittain Drive will be moved to Techwood Drive between Bobby Dodd Way and Fourth Street. Handicapped people with football tickets in the East Stands and assigned reserved parking passes will be allowed to park on Techwood between North Avenue and Bobby Dodd Way.
