Casillas, Hidalgo Make Finals on Day 1 of Zones

AUBURN, Ala. – Georgia Tech divers Matt Casillas and Camryn Hidalgo both made the finals in their respective events to start the 2019 Zone B Diving Championships on Monday at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.

Hidalgo competed in the 3-meter, where she scored a 15th-place 278.40 to advance out of prelims. Then in finals, the sophomore finished 14th in the region with a final score of 578.40.

Senior Casillas finished in the top-18 in the 1-meter prelims by scoring a 277.30 (18th) off six dives. Once in the finals, he also moved up to finish 17th overall in the region with a total score of 569.25.

Also competing in the women’s 3-meter was Carly Doi and Kesley Dekshenieks. Doi turned in a prelim score of 218.05 before Dekshenieks finished with a 200.85.

Divers who finish in the top nine advance to Nationals in the women’s 1-meter and men’s platform, while the top eight qualify out of the women’s 3-meter and top seven from the men’s 3-meter. Finally, the top six will advance from the women’s platform and men’s 1-meter. Additionally, if divers qualify in one event, they can compete in events in which they finish in the top 12.

The Yellow Jackets will return to the boards on Tuesday, March 12, competing in the women’s 1-meter and men’s 3-meter. Georgia Tech’s divers participating will be Casillas, Henry Carman and Jacob Krieder (3-meter), while Hidalgo will take the 1-meter.

Tuesday, March 12
11 a.m. – Women’s 1-meter prelims
2 p.m. – Women’s 1-meter finals (18 divers)
4 p.m. – Men’s 3-meter prelims
6:15 p.m. – Men’s 3-meter finals (18 divers)
