Carter, Jr., Named ACC Basketball Rookie of the Week

March 4, 2013

Greensboro, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Robert Carter, Jr., has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week by the conference’s voting panel, while Duke’s Ryan Kelly was voted the ACC Player of the Week, the ACC office announced Monday.

Carter averaged 13.5 points and 7.0 rebounds and shot 50 percent from the floor in Georgia Tech’s two games last week, a 78-68 victory over Maryland and a 70-57 loss to NC State. The 6-8 Thomasville, Ga., freshman recorded his fourth double-double of the season in lifting Tech to the victory against the Terps, scoring 19 points with 10 rebounds, hitting 7 of 11 shots from the floor, and 4-for-4 from the foul line while adding two assists and two blocked shots. In Sunday’s game against NC State, Carter had eight points, four rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots.

On the season, Carter is second among ACC freshmen in rebounds per game (6.8) and tied for fifth in scoring (10.0).

This was the first time Carter, Jr., has earned the honor this year. Teammate Marcus Georges-Hunt was honored twice early in the year.

Kelly returned to the Duke lineup following a 13-game absence with a right foot injury to lead the Blue Devils to a 79-76 win over No. 5 Miami on Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Raleigh, N.C., native scored a career-best 36 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, including 7-of-9 from three-point range, and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. He also added seven rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals in 32 minutes of action. Kelly had been sidelined since January 8 and just returned to the court in limited capacity on Monday.

Kelly’s 36 points were the most by a Blue Devil at Cameron Indoor Stadium since J.J. Redick had 38 points against Wake Forest on February 20, 2005.
