ATLANTA – Defensive back James Butler, record-breaker Vesna Stojanovska and freshman standout Roberto Castro were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, October 27, 2003.
Butler, a junior from Climax, Ga., had two interceptions to lead a stellar defensive effort in Georgia Tech’s 7-3 victory over Maryland on Thursday night. The Tech defense held Maryland to its lowest point total since the 2002 season opener and limited the Terps to 253 yards of total offense while forcing four turnovers. Butler intercepted Maryland quarterback Scott McBrien on the Terps’ first possession and then sealed the victory by intercepting backup quarterback Joel Statham with 3:28 left. He finished the game with 12 tackles and now leads the ACC and ranks ninth in the nation with five interceptions.
Castro, a freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., helped lead the Georgia Tech golf team to its first team victory since 2002 at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate on October 21st, as the Yellow Jackets defeated top-ranked Florida by 15 shots in the event. Castro was Tech’s top individual finisher with an eight-under-par score of 68-70-70-209. That was his lowest 54-hold score of the year and allowed him to finish alone in second place in the individual standings, as he was one of three Yellow Jackets in the top 10. The second-place finish was Castro’s second top-10 placement of the year and lowered his team-best stroke average to an outstanding 70.73. He also has six sub-par rounds in 2003-04 and has been at par or better in all but three rounds this year.
Stojanovska, a freshman from Skopje, Macedonia, helped lead the Tech women’s swimming and diving team to just its second ACC victory in school history by earning three wins on Saturday in her Yellow Jacket debut. She broke two school records against NC State, setting new marks in both the 200- and the 1000-yard freestyle events with times of 1:51.65 and 10:21.52, respectively. She cruised to a three-second victory in her third race of the day, the 500-free, with a time of 5:02.03.
