Ben Bodipo-Memba, a former assistant coach at Western Carolina and member of the U.S. National team, has been hired as an assistant volleyball coach at Georgia Tech, head coach Bond Shymansky announced Friday.
Bodipo-Memba’s playing career was highlighted by a stint on the U.S. National team from 1993-95. He also started at middle blocker on the Silver Medal team in the U.S. Olympic Festival. He played collegiately at San Diego State and has one year of professional experience (1996) in Finland as a member of Raison Loimu.
Bodipo-Memba, 32, joins Shymansky’s staff after serving the past five years as an assistant coach for the Catamounts, helping them to a 99-71 record, including four straight 20 win seasons.
“Ben will bring a wealth of great training expertise from his national team experience to our program,” said Shymansky. “His knowledge is matched only by his enthusiasm for the game. He will be a valuable asset for us in terms of recruiting and also in the gym.”
Bodipo-Memba’s main responsibility at Georgia Tech will be coordinating the offense, which will include training the middle blockers. In addition, he will be responsible for recruiting and scouting.
A native of Novato, Calif., Bodipo-Memba spent eight years coaching various high schools and club teams in the San Diego area. His last prep assignment was at Francis Parker High School, where he served as the head junior varsity boys coach and as an assistant coach for both the girls and boys teams from 1996-97. In addition, he served as a head coach with the San Diego Volleyball Club from 1994-97, guiding the program’s top 17-and-under and 14-and-under teams.
