Bianca Stewart Leads Track & Field on Day One of NCAA Eastern Preliminary Round

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Members of the Georgia Tech women and men’s track and field team’s took part in several events on the first day of the 2010 NCAA Eastern Preliminary Round meet held at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

Tech was led on the day by sophomore Bianca Stewart, who qualified for one of the 12 open spots in the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships in the high jump after placing eighth overall with a leap of five feet, 10 inches. The mark was a career best for the Maplewood, N.J. native and puts Stewart in a tie for fourth all-time in the school’s outdoor record book in the event.

In women’s preliminary track events, two Tech sprinters qualified for semi-final action tomorrow. In the women’s 400m hurdles, junior Leslie Njoku placed 16th overall in 58.52 to earn a spot in tomorrow semi’s, while in the 400m dash, senior Tiffany Grant crossed the finish line in 53.76 to finish 12th overall (the time was a new personal best for Grant).

On the men’s side, senior Alphonso Jordan missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the long jump after finishing 15th overall with a leap of 24 feet, seven inches. On the track, junior Antonio McKay Jr. punched his ticket to tomorrow’s semi-final round of the 400m dash with an 18th place finish in 46.59. The time for McKay Jr. was also a new personal-best for the Roswell, Ga. native.

Action continues tomorrow in Greensboro with things getting underway at 10 a.m. with the women’s javelin throw.
