Bergmann Awarded ACC Co-Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann has been named ACC Co-Player of the Week along with Syracuse middle blocker Marina Markova after leading No. 14 Georgia Tech volleyball (19-3, 10-2 ACC) to another undefeated weekend of ACC play, the league office announced on Tuesday.

The award marks Bergmann’s third Atlantic Coast Conference weekly honor this season and first shared title on the year. With the recognition, the lauded Jacket picks up her fourth career ACC Player of the Week honor and sixth total Atlantic Coast Conference weekly award after being tabbed ACC Freshman of the Week twice in her first season on The Flats.

The Jackets have now racked up eight ACC weekly awards on the year, the most in program history on record. The staggering tally leads the league this season as senior outside hitter Mariana Brambilla also owns two ACC Player of the Week honors while freshman outside hitter Bianca Bertolino has been selected as ACC Freshman of the Week three times in her first collegiate season.

Bergmann receives the honor after propelling Georgia Tech to its seventh and eighth straight wins with a sweep of North Carolina and a 3-1 victory over NC State.  The powerful outside hitter spearheaded the Tech attack, leading the squad with 38 kills, including three aces, for a gaudy 5.43 kills per set at a robust .460 clip. Bergmann also contributed defensively with a team-high 22 digs to go with five total blocks (one solo, four assisted) through the two contests. Those totals led to a pair of double doubles as she increased her team-best tally to 10 on the season.

Bergmann opened the weekend with a team-leading 17 kills at a season-high .536 clip along with a team-high 12 digs against North Carolina for her first double double of the two-match slate. The veteran followed that with another team-best of 21 kills, including a pair of aces, behind a .400 hitting percentage as well as 10 digs (tied for second on the squad) and three block assists (also second on the team) for her second double double of the weekend as Tech downed NC State. The 21 kills and 24.5 points against the Wolfpack both tie for the third most amongst the ACC in a four-set match this season.

On top of already owning two ACC Player of the Week honors prior to this week, the heavy hitter also boasts a national AVCA Player of the Week award from the opening week of the season. Throughout nonconference play, Bergmann was named UCF Challenge MVP and to three all-tournament teams as well.

The decorated Jacket’s numbers back up her accolades as she’s among the nation’s best in multiple categories. To date, the veteran has led the Jacket attack with 323 kills (4.14 per set) and 26 service aces along with pitching in on the defensive end with 210 digs and 40 total blocks (18 solo, 22 assisted). On a national scale, Bergmann is currently placed 10th in the country in points per set (5.37) and 13th in the nation in kills per set (4.67), leading the ACC in both categories. Other notable numbers for the powerful outside hitter include ranking second in the ACC and 20th in the NCAA in points (419) while slotting second in the conference and 21st in the country in kills (364).
