Freshman Carlos Benito became the last Georgia Tech player alive Monday when he outlasted Georgia’s Eric Diaz in three sets and made the consolation final in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

The first-year Yellow Jacket defeated Diaz, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) and will meet Florida’s Gordon Watson in the consolation final. Watson, a top-16 seed, downed Tech’s Nathan Rakitt, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, in the other consolation semifinal.

Diaz’ teammate, Nathan Pasha, the No. 2 seed, eased his way into the finals of the main draw by defeating top-16 seed Jordi Vives of Florida Gulf Coast (6-4, 6-4) in the quarterfinals and Florida freshman Elliott Orkin (6-1, 6-2) in the semis. He’ll face unseeded Sasha Gozun of South Florida, who went three sets and a tiebreaker to defeat the Gators’ Maxx Lipman, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (3).

Pasha has lost only one set in his five matches, that coming in the first round against South Florida’s Vadym Kalyuzhnyy. Gozun has gone three sets in the round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals and had to win tiebreakers three times.

Ignacio Gonzalez and Oliver Pramming of South Florida turned out to be the only doubles seed to reach the finals, breaking the Georgia Tech duo of Rakitt and Cole Fiegel four times on the way to an 8-3 win in the semifinals Monday. Florida State’s Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez grabbed the other spot in Tuesday’s final by outlasting 6th-seeded Gordon Watson and Elliott Orkin of Florida, 8-6.

USF’s Paul Polarczyk and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy captured the first title up for grabs Tuesday, winning the consolation doubles crown by an 8-6 win over Tech’s Benito and Casey Kay.

Finals in singles and doubles for the main draw and the consolation singles final will be played beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. The champions advance to compete in the USTA/ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships, Nov. 7-11 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
