Bailey Wagner Captures Discus to lead Track & Field on Day One of ACC Outdoor Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – Georgia Tech sophomore Bailey Wagner won the discus to lead the Tech track & field team’s on day one of the 2010 ACC Outdoor Championships in Clemson, S.C. After day one, the Yellow Jacket women’s team is in a tie for third overall with 11 points, while the men’s squad is in eighth overall with eight points.

Wagner won the event with a throw of 169 feet, 11 inches, beating out second place finisher Kelsey Huckins of Boston College by a full eight feet. With the win, Wagner becomes the first Georgia Tech women’s athlete to win the discus at the ACC’s and also posts a career-best mark. The mark also ranks second on Georgia Tech’s all-time list in the event.

On the men’s side of the discus, senior Steve Marcelle earned All-ACC honors for the second straight year and the fourth time in his career overall with his throw of 180 feet, eight inches. The senior’s throw just missed Virginia Tech’s Igor Misljenovic throw of 182 feet, two inches, as Marcelle earned a second place finish in the event for the second straight season.

In other action on the day for the Jackets, junior Kayla McKeirnan took part in four events in the heptathlon, finishing ninth in the 100m hurdles (15.07), 10th in the high jump (five feet, 3.25 inches) eighth in the 200 meters (25.93) and 14th in the shot put with a mark of 30 feet, 5.50 inches.

In the men’s 10,000 meters. D.J. McMillan finished 19th with a time of 31:21.34, In the women’s portion of the event, Mary Kate DuBard registered an eighth place finish in 35:54.79, while Felicity Brower placed 18th in 38:49.61.

Action continues tomorrow at the Rock Norman Track, as the remainder of the decathlon and heptathlon, as well as the long jump and shot put, 3,000-meter steeplechase, and the preliminary round of running events will be run.
