Nov. 2, 2003

ATLANTA – Sophomore Kacie Anson had a second-place finish in the B1 Doubles Draw and a third-place finish in the A2 Singles Draw to lead the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team at the Southern Intercollegiate Tournament, hosted by the University of South Carolina at the Columbia Tennis Center.

Four Yellow Jackets finished in the top five of their singles brackets, led by senior Maria Nieto who went undefeated in singles play until today, when she lost to Forgacs of Georgia State in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Her run in the B1 singles bracket included offing L. Stewart of the College of Charleston, 6-0, 6-3, Auguilar of Armstrong Atlantic State, 6-2, 6-1, and B. Baird of Furman, 6-1, 6-1.

Anson won her first two matches against M. Bechtold of UNC-Wilmington, 6-1, 6-3, and S. Moore of Furman, 6-2, 7-5, before dropping her third-round match to South Carolina’s C. Lucas, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. South Carolina’s Ganzer defaulted to Anson in the final match to give Tech the third-place finish in the A2 Singles bracket.

Sophomore Kelly Anderson and Lyndsay Shosho advanced to the third-place match of the A1 Singles bracket and were to face each other this afternoon. Anderson opened play against M. Tezi of CSU, winning 6-3, 6-2 on Friday afternoon. She defeated M. N. Hagood of Furman, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 before losing to Z. Golopencza of Armstrong Atlantic State, 6-0, 6-0 on Saturday. Shosho defeated Ziolkowska of East Tennessee State, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 in round one and R. Magory of the College of Charleston, 6-1, 6-3. She lost her third-round match to D. Wiggins of South Carolina, 6-3, 7-5 to set up the showdown against her teammate Anderson.

In doubles play, Anson teamed with freshman Alison Silverio to record wins against Georgia State’s Lynch and Rivera, 8-5, and Forgacs/Rivera, 8-3. Furman’s Baird and Davis stopped their run, however, with a score of 8-2 in the final of the B1 Doubles bracket.

Sophomore Kelly Anderson and teammate Alison Stauss won their first round match against the College of Charleston’s Moreira and Copewell, 8-4, but dropped their second match to Georgia State’s Breiholtz and Folton, 8-6. Anderson and Stauss won the third-place in the A1 Doubles bracket after South Carolina’s Wiggins and Ganzer withdrew from the match.
