Another Yellow Jacket In The Hive

May 8, 2001

ATLANTA — Right-handed pithcer Kyle Schmidt (Palm Harbor, Fla.), rated as one of the top 100 high school players in the nation, has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Georgia Tech, head coach Danny Hall announced. Schmidt joins 16 prep standouts who signed in the fall, raising the Yellow Jackets’ recruiting class to 17 players including nine pitchers, four outfielders, three infielders and one catcher.

“We’re pleased that Kyle Schmidt has decided to attend Georgia Tech,” said Hall. “He’s a big, strong guy with tremendous tools. I think that he has all the ability to one day be a weekend starter and a dominant college pitcher.”

Schmidt, who hails from the same hometown as former Tech standout and Major Leaguer Kris Wilson, is rated as the No. 55 prospect coming out of high school this year by Baseball America. His signing means that seven members of Tech’s 17-member recruiting class are ranked among the top 100 high school players in the country.

An honor roll student at Dunedin High School, Schmidt was an all-Pinellas County honoree as a junior while participating in the prestegious Area Code Games last summer. He has missed most of his senior season after suffering a broken left arm, his non-thowing arm, but he is still considered one of the top pitching prospects in America.

Schmidt and the other 16 signees will enroll in Georgia Tech this fall.
