Andres Martin Advances to Second Round of NCAAs

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis started off NCAA tournament play in the singles bracket where Andres Martin won an intense 7-5(6), 6-4 match over Daniel De Jonge of Pepperdine. The first set was highlighted by three games going to deuce point and a clinching game where Martin did not drop a point.

Set one started with Martin on serve, which he held before breaking his opponents serve, off the back of a 30-0 start to the point, to take a 2-0 lead. The next two game held serve, leading to a 3-1 lead for Martin.

The ensuing point was the first of three deuce points in the set, this one with Martin on serve. He would lose this game before coming back from a 30-0 deficit to take the next game to break back.

The very next game resulted in another broken serve for Martin, this one he was unable to break back, bringing the match level at 5-all. The servers would win the next two games to force a tiebreaker.

Martin fell behind 4-2 early in the breaker before tying it back at 4-4 and eventually winning the tiebreaker 7-5.

The second set saw each of the first three serves get broken, giving Martin a 3-1 lead after he held his second serve. The remaining games went to the servers with Martin pushing the Pepperdine serve to a deuce point each time.

The second set was eventually at 5-4 with Martin serving. He proceeded to win every point en route to a decisive victory.

Action continues for Martin on Tuesday when he matches up against Arthur Frey in the round of 32 at 1:30 p.m. Martin will be joined by doubles partner Marcus McDaniel on Tuesday when they begin doubles play against Barki/Seggermanat 6:30 p.m.
