Anderson Returns to Provide Clincher for Jacket Men's Netters

ATLANTA (Feb. 27) — Freshman Roger Anderson downed Peter Blach at No. 4 singles to clinch Georgia Tech’s 5-2 win over Vanderbilt in men’s collegiate tennis action Sunday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Anderson downed Blach in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 7-5, as the Jackets (2-5), took five of the six singles matches after dropping the doubles point. Vanderbilt (5-6) opened the match by winning the doubles point and winning at No. 1 singles.

“This was a much needed win,” said Tech head coach Kenny Thorne, whose Jackets halted a five-match losing skid with the victory. “We have played a difficult schedule and have had some injuries, so any opportunity we get to beat a team that is ranked close to us we need to do it. Today was one of those matches.”

Thorne also praised Anderson, who won as he still recovers from a sprained ankle which caused him to miss Tech’s last match against Georgia State on Wednesday.

“I’m really proud of Roger,” Thorne said. “He hasn’t hit in 10 days, but he came out and won his match pretty handily. He wasn’t playing at 100 percent today, but he was willing to do what it took for the team. He’s eager to get back playing, and that says a lot about his character. I’m happy he was able to clinch the match.”

The Jackets fell behind early after Vanderbilt won two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Tech came back in singles, however, winning at the No. 2 through 6 positions for the win.

After doubles play, Vandy’s Andrew Nisker downed Sergio Aguirre at No. 1, but Tech’s Romain Coirault and Robert Wright posted wins at No. 2 and 3 to tie the match at 2.

David Wright put the Jackets ahead 3-2 with a win at No. 5, before Anderson provided the clincher with his win at No. 4. Tech’s Fabio Campos then finished off Anders Oding at No. 6.

The Jackets now have nine days before taking on Duke Wednesday, March 8 at Duke in Durham, N.C.
