PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Kelly Anderson captured the back-draw championship of the qualifying tournament while Kristi Miller recorded another win in the main draw before falling in her quarterfinal match Friday at the 2005 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, which is being contested at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Anderson, ranked No. 102 in the nation in singles, split the first two sets against Notre Dame’s 27th-ranked Catrina Thompson, 7-6 (2), 4-6 before coming back with a 6-0 score in the third and final set to capture the consolation championship in the qualifying tournament. The senior has won five consecutive matches and is currently 9-4 this fall.
Miller, ranked eighth in the nation, downed Northwestern’s No. 50 Alexis Prousis by a 6-4, 6-1 score before falling to the main draw’s No. 3 seed, third ranked Nicole Leimbach of TCU, in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 7-5. The sophomore from Marysville, Michigan became the first Georgia Tech player to ever compete in the main draw at All-Americans when she was selected as the No. 7 seed this year.
Anderson, Miller and the rest of the 2005-06 Yellow Jacket tennis team will return to action next week when they travel to Athens, Ga. to play in the ITA South Regionals, which begin Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Georgia.
