TULSA, Okla. – David North and Eric Molnar suffered first and second-round losses Thursday in the Main Draw of The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
North won six consecutive matches, all those victories coming in straight sets, but lost in the second round of the Singles Main Draw Thursday. After defeating Virginia Tech’s Nicolas Delgado Thursday morning, North fell to No. 4 seed Somdev Devvarman of Virginia, 6-3, 6-2. Molnar defeated D.J. Gaetz of Minnesota in Thursday morning’s first round then advanced to the next round where he fell, 6-2, 7-6(2), to Virginia’s Treat Huey.
The pair also teamed up Thursday for the first round of the Doubles Main Draw where they lost to Northwestern’s Matt Christian and Willy Lock, 8-6. North and Molnar will face Paul Rose and Kurt Zaske of Purdue in the consolation round, held for those defeated in the first round of the Main Draw.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships include five days of qualifying events that precede the October 5-8 main draw. The 128-player prequalifying tournament took place Sept. 30-Oct. 1. This fed into 128-player and 64-doubles team qualifying tournaments Oct. 2-5, which then feeds into the 64-player, 32-doubles team main draws.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
