THE FLATS — Georgia Tech student-athletes continued their tradition of excellence in the classroom during the 2017 spring semester, which wrapped up earlier this month.
Georgia Tech student-athletes – 78.3 percent of which major in business or engineering – compiled a mean grade point average of 3.0 for the spring semester. Individually, 56.5 percent of the Yellow Jackets’ student-athletes had a 3.0 GPA or better and 45 percent earned a spot on the Institute’s Dean’s List or Faculty Honors.
For the second-straight semester, Georgia Tech softball put together the athletics department’s highest team GPA at 3.25 (following a 3.20 team GPA in the fall). Also for the second-straight semester, men’s cross country/track and field had the highest team GPA among men’s teams at 3.22 (following a 3.19 team GPA in the fall).
Georgia Tech student-athletes have the unique combination at competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference while also attending one of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions (ranked the No. 7 overall public university in the nation and the No. 10 engineering school in the world by U.S. News & World Report).
Nearly 29 percent of Georgia Tech’s student-athletes (28.85%) pursue majors in the Institute’s College of Engineering, which is the No. 4 ranked undergraduate engineering program in the United States, while almost 50 percent (49.45%) of Tech’s student-athletes have majors in the Scheller College of Business, which is the No. 32 ranked undergraduate business program in the U.S. (both rankings according to U.S. News & World Report).
The remainder of Georgia Tech’s student-athletes’ undergraduate majors are in the College of Sciences (7.9%), the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts (7.69%), the College of Computing (3.6%) and the College of Design (1.1%). Just over one percent (1.4%) of Georgia Tech’s student-athletes are graduate students.
