Junior Zachary Rath won at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles to lead the Georgia Tech men `s tennis team to a 6-1 win over cross-town rival Georgia State Wednesday. With the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-0 on the season while the Panthers fall to 3-1.
Georgia Tech got on the board by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The 22nd ranked team of Marko Rajevac and David North won easily at No. 1 over Martin Stiegwardt and Anze Cevka, 8-3. Tech then won the point as the team of Rath and Scott Blackmon won at No. 2 over Clarence Boyd and Nejc Podkrajsek, 8-5. In the finals doubles match of the day, Jordan Delass and George Gvelesiani fell to the Panther’s team of Jacek Twarowski and Matija Sulin, 8-5.
In singles play, gave the Jackets their second point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Matija Sulin at No. 3. Soon after, Rath defeated Podkrajsek, 6-3, 6-0 to give Tech a 3-0 lead. The Jackets then won the match as North won over Boyd at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
In other singles action on the day, Georgia State’s Twarowski won at No. 6 singles over Blackmon, 6-3, 6-2 while Rajevac held on to win at No. 1 singles over Stiegwardt, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 and Gvelesiani won at No. 5 singles over Cevka, 6-2, 6-7 (1), 1-0 (6).
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday when they host No. 53 Alabama at 1 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
