by Nikki Kaminskas – This weekend we ventured out onto the road to start off Atlantic Coast Conference play against North Carolina and NC State. As a team we were all psyched up and ready to go remembering the rough start we had last year, determined to start off better this season, and to playing to the 212th degree (shout out to Erin!). We left a gorgeous, cool Atlanta day to fly into a humid, sticky, gross Carolina afternoon. This heat continued to hound us all trip.
We opened up at North Carolina. You could feel the anticipation in the air as we ran out to start game 1. We were ready to test our best `Tech ball’ against a good team and see what damage we could do. And damage we did do! We were diving and sweating all over the place, literally all over the place! It was so hot in the gym that several of us (It’s ok Meeshe I fell too!) slipped and fell all over the floor. After a great four games of hard work, passion, and intense focus we came out on top winning our first ACC match!
On Saturday we had a day off, so we all went to a nearby sports restaurant to cheer on our football team. Afterwards we had free range of a gigantic mall!! Bad idea Bond! The team had what we like to call `retail bonding’, and what our parents like to call “You bought what!? And it was how much!?” After spending copious amounts of money and walking around all day we were spent. We went back to the hotel to freshen up and go to our favorite restaurant, Kanki. Kanki is a Japanese steakhouse where they cook your meal right in front of you. It’s a tradition that we look forward to every year. After dinner we returned to the hotel to get ready for NC State on Sunday.
On Sunday it was time to get back to business, refreshed from our day off we took on the NC State Wolfpack. It’s always entertaining to play at NC State because they have the best hecklers in the conference. It is hard to stay focused when you are laughing at what the hecklers are saying, but we managed to pull through to win the match. It was great to see younger players getting into the game and accreting their presence.
Overall it was a great weekend. We are now 2-0 in conference play and looking forward to playing at home again next weekend!
