ATLANTA–Georgia Tech’s 2006 football schedule, announced Wednesday, by the Atlantic Coast Conference, opens on Sept. 2 as Notre Dame visits Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field.
Coming off a 7-5 season and a school-record ninth straight bowl appearance, Tech faces a challenging schedule that includes seven teams that played in bowl games this season, including three schools ranked in the final Associated Press Top 10 and five in the Top 25.
Notre Dame, coming off a 9-3 campaign and a BCS berth in the Fiesta Bowl, comes to Atlanta for the first time since 1980, when Tech scored a 3-3 tie with the then No.-1-ranked Fighting Irish. The teams last met in the Toyota Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, 1999, which the Jackets won, 35-28. Tech will travel to Notre Dame in 2007 to complete the home-and-home.
“It’s exciting to have the opportunity to play a Top 10 team like Notre Dame, especially at home,” said head coach Chan Gailey, who enters his fifth season at Tech. “They’re a great program, and it will be a tremendous challenge for our football team.”
The Notre Dame contest is the first of four straight home games in a 19-day span for the Yellow Jackets, who host non-conference games with Samford on Sept. 9 and Troy on Sept. 16.
Then, for the 14th year in a row, Georgia Tech will be featured in ESPN’s nationally-televised Thursday night package as the Jackets host Virginia in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Thursday, Sept. 21 at Bobby Dodd Stadium/Grant Field.
Other home games include Maryland (Oct. 7), Miami (Oct. 28), and Duke (Nov. 18).
Tech’s road slate includes visits to Virginia Tech (Sept. 30), Clemson (Oct. 21), NC State (Nov. 4), North Carolina (Nov. 11) and Georgia (Nov. 25).
The complete Georgia Tech schedule is listed below. Times and television designations are to be announced.
Information on Georgia Tech season ticket purchases and renewals will be available within two weeks.
