Yellow Jackets Win Five Of Six Matches On Day One Of Fall Opener

THE FLATS – Senior Elizabeth Kilborn led the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team to five wins in six matches on day one of the Southern Shootout hosted by Georgia State at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park in Atlanta Friday.

Kilborn, the only ranked Yellow Jacket at No. 94, defeated 29th-ranked Ecaterina Vasenina of USF in three sets, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, in the Peachtree Flight. It was the second win of the day for Kilborn after her and doubles partner Kendal Woodard knocked off NC State’s side of Joelle Kissell and Rachel James-Baker, 8-2, in doubles play.

Junior Alex Anghelescu and sophomore Jasmine Minor added a doubles victory when the battled past NC State’s team of Elisha Hande and Chloe Smith, 8-5, in the Pounce Flight.

Woodard, a freshman from Stockbridge, Ga., added her second win of the day with a victory over USF’s Paula Montoya in the Centennial Olympic Flight. Woodard cruised to a 6-1 first-set victory and fought for a 7-5 second-set win and her first collegiate singles victory.

Fellow freshman Natasha Prokhnevska tallied a win in her collegiate debut as well. The Wilmington, Del., native tallied a 6-3, 6-0 win over the Bull’s Kate Parker in the MLK Flight.

Doubles play will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Tech teams taking on teams from Georgia State. Singles play will follow with the Yellow Jacket individuals facing NC State singles.
