Yellow Jackets Sweep ACC Tennis Weekly Honors

Feb. 12, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Kirsten Flower and David North have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Players of the Week for their stellar performances in non-conference action the week of February 5-11. Flower led the women’s team to its second Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championship title, while the men’s team pushed its undefeated streak to 5-0 on the season.

Flower posted a 4-0 mark in singles and a 3-1 record in doubles, as No. 4 Georgia Tech defeated four ranked teams – top-ranked Stanford, third-ranked Northwestern, sixth-ranked Georgia and 75th-ranked Wisconsin – en route to capturing the 2008 ITA indoor team title last week. The sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, won all her matches at the No. 5 singles flight, including a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win against 99th-ranked Lauren Lui of Northwestern on Sunday. In doubles, Flower paired up with Kristi Miller at the top doubles spot against all four teams. She and Miller clinched the doubles point for the Yellow Jackets versus Northwestern in the championship match, as the duo notched an 8-5 win over the nation’s seventh-ranked tandem of Lui and Samantha Murray.

A native of Durban, South Africa, North went undefeated in singles and doubles action to help No. 41 Georgia Tech notch a 4-3 win over 56th-ranked Mississippi State on Sunday. With the match tied at 3-3, North clinched the victory for the Yellow Jackets as the unranked senior knocked off the nation’s No. 14 singles player Philippe Frayssinoux 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Earlier in the day, North joined teammate George Gvelesiani in doubles play for a convincing 8-2 win against the Bulldogs’ tandem of Ryan Farlow and Artem Kuznetsov.

The Yellow Jackets are back on the court this week, facing two different SEC opponents. The men welcome Auburn to the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m., while the women entertain Kentucky at noon on Sunday, Feb. 17.
