ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets’ women’s tennis team will begin the 2011 season ranked 16th in the first Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings released today.
Tech is one of 16 schools that have both its men’s and women’s squads ranked, as the Yellow Jacket men’s team is 23rd in the initial ranking of the year.
The Stanford Cardinal received 46 first place votes and hold down the top spot.
“While it is an honor to be ranked to begin the season, the ranking are not our biggest concern,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “Our goals for the season are more about getting better every single day, so we can be in a position to win championships.”
The Jackets will host Northwestern in their first dual match of the spring season on Jan. 23 in Atlanta. The Wildcats spent most of last season ranked No. 1 and begin the 2011 campaign ninth.
Of the 19 dual-match opponents on Tech’s schedule, 10 are ranked in the initial Top 25. In addition to Northwestern, Tech will also face Notre Dame (No. 4), North Carolina (No. 6) and Duke (No. 7), all of whom are ranked in the Top 10. The Fighting Irish will come to the Bill Moore Tennis Center March 24, while the Jackets will travel to Chapel Hill and Durham, April 9 and 10, respectively.
The Yellow Jackets will open their spring season Jan. 15-17 at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
