ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (11-5, 1-2 ACC) will host two tough matches this weekend as it welcomes first-ranked Virginia (17-0, 3-0) Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Virginia Tech (9-3, 2-1) Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. Live updates will be available on RamblinWreck.com.
“The Atlantic Coast Conference is great,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “We have the top team in the country coming in Friday and one of the better teams in the nation on Saturday. It looks like a great weekend for college tennis so we hope to get some good support for some great tennis.”
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a pair of 7-0 wins over Wofford and Chattanooga on Tuesday. The Tech freshmen led the way with a total of nine singles wins in the two matches. These were the last non-conference meetings for the Jackets as they finish the season with eight straight ACC matches.
The Jackets are 11-22 all-time against Virginia. The Cavaliers come to Atlanta having won five straight matches over Tech with the last Tech win coming in 2002, a 6-1 victory in Atlanta.
This is only the sixth meeting between the Jackets and the Virginia Tech. The Hokies hold a 3-2 edge over the Jackets, including a win in Blacksburg last year. The Jackets beat the Hokies in Atlanta, 5-2, in 2006.
“UVA has the No. 1 singles player and No. 1 doubles team in the nation so those are some great opportunities for our guys,” Thorne said. “We look forward to battling with both teams this weekend.”
After this weekend Tech only has two home matches remaining. Tech will hit the road next weekend to visit North Carolina State on Friday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m. and a match at Wake Forest on Sunday, March 30 at noon.
