CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Irina Falconi won her 15th straight singles match but the Georgia Tech Women’s Tennis Team (13-9, 4-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) dropped a 5-2 decision to Virginia (13-7, 6-4) Saturday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center.

“We did not get off to a good start in doubles and we were constantly fighting an uphill battle,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “Virginia has a very talented team and played well today.”

The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Yellow Jackets by sweeping the doubles point. The home team clinched the point when No. 55 Erin Vierra and Lindsey Hardenbergh finished off Lynn Blau and Hillary Davis, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles.

Falconi, the nation’s top-ranked player, tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over No. 44 Hardenbergh at the top spot in the lineup. Falconi is 9-0 against ACC opponents this season.

Virginia responded with victories on courts two and four to take a commanding lead on the Jackets and clinched the match when Jennifer Stevens defeated Elizabeth Kilborn, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-2, at No. 5 singles.

In the final match to be completed on the afternoon, Tech’s Viet Ha Ngo picked up a hard-fought, three set (3-6, 6-2, 7-5) win over Vierra at number three singles.

The Yellow Jackets will close out their regular season tomorrow afternoon against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The match is slated to begin at noon.
