Yellow Jackets Earn ACC Weekly Awards In Football, Basketball

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech football players George Godsey, Daryl Smith and David Schmidgall earned Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week recognition for leading the Yellow Jackets to a 27-15 victory over Georgia, while basketball freshman Marvin Lewis was named ACC Rookie of the Week.

Godsey, the junior quarterback from Tampa, Fla., was named ACC Offensive Back of the Week for the third time in the last four games as he passed for 222 yards and one touchdown and ran 33 yards for another touchdown to lead the Yellow Jackets to their seventh straight victory. Godsey needed to just 96 seconds to get Tech on the scoreboard, capping an 82-yard drive with a 33-yard option keeper. The score was his second rushing touchdown in as many games after never scoring a touchdown previously. He completed 14 of 25 passes for 187 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown pass to Kerry Watkins, in the decisive first half to stake Tech to a 27-3 lead at the intermission.

Schmidgall, Techs junior center, earned ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors as helped the Tech offense outgain the Bulldogs, 288-157, and gain 101 yards rushing in the decisive first half. Playing against Georgias highly regarded defensive tackles, the Tech offensive line did not allow a sack for the third straight game.

Smith, a true freshman linebacker from Albany, Ga., was named ACC Rookie and Defensive Lineman of the Week as made the play of the game with his interception return for a touchdown. Late in the first half, Smith grabbed a deflected pass and raced 70 yards for a score to give the Yellow Jackets a decisive 27-3 lead at the half. Smith finished with a season-best 16 tackles, including 10 primary hits, along with two tackles for loss and three pass breakups as Tech held the Bulldogs to just 26 yards rushing. He finished as Tech’s leading tackler for the season with 96.

On the basketball side, Lewis was honored as the leagues top rookie after he averaged 16 points, six rebounds and 2.5 assists in Tech’s two victories. He shot 52.6 percent from the field (10-19) for the week, including 8-for-13 from three-point range.

The 6-3 wing player scored 22 points in Tech’s 92-61 victory over Davidson. He was 6-for-7 from three-point range and also contributed seven rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes of play. Earlier in the week, Lewis had 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal in Techs 85-62 win over Charleston Southern.
