TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 17th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team was unable to capitalize on a sweep of the day’s doubles matches and dropped a 6-1 decision on the road to Florida State on Saturday afternoon in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Yellow Jackets (13-8, 3-5 ACC) jumped out early on the Seminoles (11-12, 2-4 ACC) as Tech went unbeaten in doubles play to lead the match 1-0. At the No. 1 doubles spot, Tech’s duo of Jaime Wong and Mason Miller defeated Jessica Balbuena and Lauren Walker by an 8-4 score to get the Jackets started. Sekita Grant and Mysti Morris followed them at No. 2, downing Christina Denny and Alida Gallovits by an 8-5 count. Tech’s final match win of the day came at No. 3 doubles as Catherine Gunn and Fallon Koon downed Anca Dumitrescu and Beth Lawrence by an 8-5 score.
Tech fought hard in the singles portion of the match, but was unable to break through for a win dropping all six matches in singles play. A number of matches were tight with the closest being at No. 3, as Yellow Jacket freshman Catherine Gunn lost only her third dual-match singles outing of the year to Jessica Balbuena in straight sets by a score of 6-4, 6-4. Junior Jaime Wong moved to the No. 1 spot after playing No. 2 for much of the year and was unable to defeat Anca Dumitrescu, dropping a 6-3, 7-5 decision.
The Yellow Jackets will now have two weeks off before heading to Raleigh, N.C., to compete in the ACC Championships on April 19-21.
