Women’s XC Takes First Place at Stan Sims Opener, Men Place Second

Acworth, Ga. – Georgia Tech women’s cross country started the 2023 season with a first-place team performance, capturing the Stan Sims Opener, while the men placed second in their season debut. Women’s distance runner Helena Lindsay won the women’s 5k race, with a time of 17:01.68.

“It was fun to watch both teams compete after a short two weeks of practice,” said head men’s and women’s cross country coach Alan Drosky. “To open with Georgia, an up-and-coming KSU team, and a national caliber DIII team in Emory, we knew it would be exciting.”

The Tech women finished the race with 30 points to take home the title, with Kennesaw State coming in second with 44 points. On the men’s side, the Jackets finished with 29 points, right behind Georgia (27 points).

“We are really pleased with the win for the women. They executed well, competed hard, and took care of business,” added Drosky.

Lindsay led Tech in the women’s 5k with a time of 17:01.68. The women swept the podium with Mary Brady placing second (17:23.73), and Grace Driskill placing third (17:23.91). Three other runners finished in the top 15, rounding out the race for the women.

Senior Zach Jaeger and junior John Higinbotham lead the swarm for the Yellow Jacket men as both runners earned top-5 finishes in the 5k race with times of 14:35.51 and 14:42.36, respectively. Joey Sandal, Devin Wade and Alex Arrambide added to the men’s leaderboard claiming the sixth, seventh, and eighth finishing spots.

“The men coming up short was disappointing,” Drosky said. “But we saw a lot of good, and we saw areas to improve.”

Georgia Tech will hit the road for its next meet in Gainesville, Fla., at the Mountain Dew Invitational on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7:40 a.m.
