Women's Tennis Team Falls to Clemson, 4-3

CLEMSON, SC – The 20th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team had a nine-match winning streak snapped and suffered its first Atlantic Coast conference loss of the season as the Yellow Jackets fell to No. 25 Clemson, 4-3, Thursday at the Tigers’ Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.

Tech, which was seeking a school-record 5-0 start in ACC play, fell to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while the Tigers improved to 15-3 overall and 5-0 in the ACC.

Alix Lacelarie the upset Tech’s Jaime Wong, ranked No. 70 nationally,, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 singles to clinch the match for Clemson.

Clemson won two out of three doubles matches to pick up the doubles point. The Tigers’ 31st-ranked duo of Julie Coin and Laurence Jayet defeated Georgia Tech’s No. 34 Kelly Anderson and Jaime Wong, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles, while Clemson’s 59th-ranked team of Daniela Alvarez and Alix Lacelarie won an 8-4 decision over the Jackets’ Mysti Morris and Lyndsay Shosho at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3, Tech’s Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto defeated Anna Dolinska and Ioana Paun, 8-1.

Tech began singles play with a pair of victories as Shosho earned a straight set win ove rAna Stiglic at No. 6 singles, 6-1. 6-1, and Morris knocked off Jayet, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 4 flight. But Clemson then reeled off three straight wins to seal the match.

At No. 1 singles, Clemson’s Coin, ranked No. 21 nationally, defeated Gunn, 6-2, 6-3, and Paun downed Tech’s Sekita Grant, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5 singles before Lacelarie clinched the match for the Tigers.

Tech’s Kelly Anderson defeated Daniela Alvarez, 6-7 (7), 6-4, (10-3), at No. 3 singles.

Tech hosts Florida State Saturday at 11 a.m. in an Atlantic Coast Conference match at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
