Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 2 NC State, 5-2

THE FLATS – Mahak Jain and Kylie Bilchev took home singles victories, but it wasn’t enough as Georgia Tech dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 2 NC State Sunday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The loss, which snapped a six-match win streak, moved the Yellow Jackets to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

NC State swept doubles play to take the early match lead. The Yellow Jackets kept it close early on in doubles, but the Wolfpack gained momentum and pulled away on all three courts. Court three wrapped up first as Priska Nugroho and Sophie Abrams grabbed a 6-4 decision over Gia Cohen and Ruth Marsh. The teams stood on serve at 4-all before the Wolfpack won the next two games to give NC State the early advantage in doubles.

The point was clinched seconds later on court two where Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli defeated Ava Hrastar and Kylie Bilchev, 6-2. The Wolfpack held match point on court three as court two finished. Despite Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura challenging Nell Miller and Jaeda Daniel, the Wolfpack captured the match, 6-3.

Rencheli added a point for the Wolfpack from court two, collecting a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hrastar before Rajecki cushioned the lead from court six. Georgia Tech got on the scoreboard taking the next two courts to finish. Competing on court four, Jain collected a win over Miller. On serve at 4-4 in the opening set, Jain battled for the next two games to take a set lead, 6-4. She held strong in the second set, opening with a 4-1 lead and sealing the match, 6-3.

Minutes late Bilchev sealed a victory on court three as the Jacket upended Nugroho in straight-sets. Bilchev went up a break at 3-2 and never looked back in the first set, winning 6-3. The freshman grabbed a 3-2 advantage in the second set and pocketed the victory, 6-3, to setup a 4-2 tally.

All eyes turned to the last court playing, featuring a competitive battle between Carol Lee and Jaeda Daniel on court one. After Daniel took the first set, 6-2, Lee battled back from a 4-1 second set deficit, fought off a match point, and forced a tiebreak at 6-6. Lee took a 4-1 lead in the breaker, but Daniel rallied back to 4-4. The Jacket held set point at 6-5, but Daniel hit the corner to move back to 6-all.
