ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s swimming and diving team defeated Western Kentucky 135.5-107.5 but the men fell to the Hilltoppers on Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Sophomore Agatha Kwasnik broke the school record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.09 as part of the first-place finishing 400yd freestyle relay team to lead the Tech women (4-3, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) over the Hilltoppers.
“Being able to break the record in season really makes me excited to see what we can do at the end of the season,” Kwasnik said. “As a whole, our team is really fired up for the rest of the schedule.”
Divers Hannah Krimm and Stephanie England finished one and two in both the one- and three-meter diving events as the Jackets pulled off 10-first place finishes on the day. Krimm registered 269.24 points in the one-meter event and 294.15 points on the three-meter springboard.
Senior Elizabeth Stowe picked up two victories on the day, winning both the 500yd free (4:59.00) and the 1000yd free (10:14.33) for Tech. Also earning two victories was sophomore Jing Li, who won the 200yd IM in a time of 2:08.38 and touched the wall first in the 100yd free with a time of 52.64.
“This was a great win for the women’s squad,” head coach Stu Wilson said. “The team stepped up and really improved from last weekend to today. I was very pleased at their performance.”
The men’s meet came down to the final exchange of the 4x100yd freestyle relay with Western Kentucky touching the wall at 3:03.98 to the Jackets 3:04.31. Senior Jacob Kwasnik held the lead in the final turn but fell just behind the Hilltoppers Francis Gilmore in the final 15 yards of the race.
The Tech men (1-3, 0-2 ACC) ended up dropping a 126-117 decision to Western Kentucky after the tough relay event.
The Yellow Jackets were led by junior Mickey Malul, who earned a victory in the 200yd breast with a time of 2:07.20. Malul also anchored the 200yd medley relay team to a first-place finish with a time of 1:30.84.
Junior Noah Copeland picked up a victory in the 200yd free with a time of 1:40.20. Fellow junior Mauricio Sousa touched the wall in a time of 20.83 in the 50yd free to also earn a win for Tech.
The Jackets took first and second place in both the one- and three-meter diving events. Senior Evan Stowers swept the two events with a score of 322.80 on the one-meter board and registering a 340.87 on the three-meter board. Senior Peter Doblar came in second with scores of 278.92 in the one-meter event and 293.47 in the three-meter event.
“This is a very tough break,” said Wilson of the men’s meet. “The team kept their composure and raced to the end. The divers did a great job for us but we just didn’t get it done in the pool today.”
