Women Finish Third, Men 11Th At Greater Louisville Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jenny Sims placed 15th to lead the Georgia Tech women’s cross country team to a third-place finish on Saturday at the Greater Louisville Classic. The men’s team finished 11th behind a strong performance from David Herren at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

Sims, who finished the 5K Gold race in a time of 17:51.17, was followed in by Elena Linn. The senior crossed the line in 16th place with a time of 17:51.58. Nisha Kurian was the third Jacket to finish the race, placing 28th with a time of 18:07.67.

Junior Katina Zuganelis was the fourth Tech runner to cross the line for the second consecutive race, finishing 44th overall with a time f 18:36.02.

The women’s team, ranked sixth in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Region poll, finished with a total of 174 points. University of Kentucky, ranked seventh in the Southeast region, picked up the victory with a total of 55 points. They were followed by host Louisville, who scored 103 points on the day.

On the men’s side, Herren placed 22nd overall in a time of 24:37.16 in the men’s 8K Gold race. Senior Cristan Duvall finished second for the Jackets and in 49th-place overall with a time of 25:08.87. In 57th place was E.C. Gibbs, who crossed the line in 25:13.97.

The Jackets, ranked 11th in the South Region, scored a total of 318 points on the day, finishing ahead of in-state rival Georgia State, who is ranked ninth in the South Region. Host and nationally-ranked Louisville earned the victory with a total of 58 points. The next closest team in the standings was Rend Lake College, who finished with 146 points.

Tech will have a week off from competition before returning to action at the Pre-Nationals at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., site of the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
