Women Finish First, Men Second at Jacksonville State

Sept. 5, 2015

Men’s Results I Women’s Results
OXFORD, Ala. –
The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country squads opened their seasons with strong starts as the women finished first and the men finished second at the the 2015 JSU/Struts Invitational in Oxford, Ala. The women posted a score of 15 in the 4k, while the men posted a score of 40 in the 5k.

Tech had the top five finishers on the women’s side as Melissa Fairey, Hayley Keadey, Morgan Jackson, Mary Prouty and Sarah Bowles led the field. Jeremy Greenwald won on the men’s side, his fourth first-place finish since the beginning of last season. Alex Grady, Zane Coburn and Patrick Fleming finished eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively.

“It was great to get the win in the women’s race,” said coach Alan Drosky. “To have five women in front within four seconds of each other was impressive. (Melissa) Fairey and (Hayley) Keadey went to the lead at the mile mark and worked well together to the finish. The next three of (Morgan) Jackson, (Mary) Prouty and (Sarah) Bowles moved up well throughout the race and almost got to our first two.  Behind them our depth was solid too, with all sixteen women within fifty-four seconds of each other.  Even though the conditions weren’t the best with the heat and humidity, the women put together a great team effort and showed some real promise today.”

“Overall not what we wanted today for the men, but congratulations to (Jeremy) Greenwald on a nice individual win over some strong competitors,” stated Drosky. “He ran a smart, composed race, stayed with the leaders throughout, then closed out the win in the last quarter-mile. Behind him we didn’t get what we needed to win. Our second through seventh were all within five seconds of each other and all within thirty seconds of Jeremy. Most races that likely gets you the win, but congratulations to Georgia on a strong effort today.  So while it was a solid season opener for the men, our goal was to win.  We’ll build off this and get back to work.”

Both teams will continue their seasons September 19 in Nashville at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic.
