TALLAHASSEE, FLA – Alexandra Preiss recorded a career high 11 kills as the Georgia Tech volleyball team (17-4, 7-1) defeated Florida A&M (8-8, 5-0) in the three games Sunday afternoon, October 15, 15-8, 15-6, 15-8.
In addition to Preiss, the Jackets were led by Kyleen Bell who recorded 10 kills and Amanda Hess who had nine digs and three aces. The offensive duties were shared by Courtney Adler, who had 18 assists and Kele Eveland who tallied 14 assists and five digs.
In game one, the Jackets jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with a kill from Dore Pap, an ace from Hess, and a stuff block from Preiss and Geeske Banck. Florida A&M notched three points to make the score 6-3 on poor passing from Tech as Eveland was called for a lift and a backrow attack, and Keight Vincent was aced. The Jackets then made the score 9-5 as they were able to score on two Rattler errors and a kill from Pap. Florida A&M would score the next three points to make it 9-8 as Kyleen Bell recorded an error, Preiss was aced, and Banck hit a ball into the block. But, the Jackets went on a 6-0 scoring run to close out the game, 15-8, as Preiss served two aces, Eida Mabry recorded a kill, and Bell and Pap recorded a stuff block.
Despite falling behind 1-3 in game two, the Jackets quickly took control. Tech scored on a Florida A&M error, a kill from Mabry off a Vincent dig and a stuff block from Banck and Preiss to tie the score 3-3. With Courtney Adler serving, the Jackets scored six points as Bell notched two kills, Adler recorded two aces and Florida A&M recorded a hitting error, making the score 11-4. Amanda Hess tallied two aces, increasing the score to 13-6, and the Jackets scored two more points on a Florida A&M error, and a kill from Preiss to win the game, 15-6.
Game three saw much of the same control by the Jackets as they took a 9-2 lead on strong hitting from Bell, good blocking from Preiss and Mabry, and Florida A&M hitting errors. The Rattlers would make the score 10-5 as they recorded two serving aces and Shante Haymore recorded a kill. The Jackets would then score three points on two kills from Banck and a service ace. However, Florida A&M would not go away as they tallied two aces and scored on a Jacket hitting error, making the score 13-8. Jessica Dickerson recorded a kill to sideout for Tech, and then notched two more kills in the game to score the final two points of the match.
The Jackets return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday as they host Wake Forest (13-6, 4-4) in O’Keefe Gymnasium.
