ATLANTA – Sixth-seed Allie Will of Florida captured the main singles draw, while the team of Laura Vallerdu and Gabriella Meija of Miami took the main doubles draw on the final day of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Championships at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
Will captured the singles championship with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Florida State’s Noemie Scarle in the finals. Will punched her ticket to the finals after beating Miami’s Vallerdu in come-from-behind fashion, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Scarle earned a trip to the finals with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Georgia’s Nadja Gilchrist.
In doubles action, Vallverdu and Meija took the main draw championship with an 8-3 win over Melissa Koning and Irene Rehberger of South Florida. Vallerdu and Meija, who entered the draw as the third-seed, took down the top-seeds from Florida yesterday to earn a trip to the finals.
In the consolation singles bracket, South Florida’s Rehberger took the bracket after sweeping teammate Ecaterina Vasenina 6-2, 6-2. Rehberger earned a spot in the finals after knocking off Georgia Tech’s Hillary Davis 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals.
The winners of each draw now move on to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which will be held in New Haven, Conn. from Nov. 5-8.
