Wheeler and Chind Named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

Oct. 2, 2006

Philip Wheeler and Mary Chind were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, October 2, 2006.

Wheeler, a redshirt junior from Columbus, Ga., led an outstanding defensive effort in the Yellow Jackets’ 38-27 road victory at 10th-ranked Virginia Tech. Wheeler had eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, including two sacks for minus-22 yards, and a forced fumble, which proved to be one of the key plays in the game. With Georgia Tech leading 24-13, Virginia Tech opened the second half on offense and quickly moved to midfield when Wheeler came on a blitz and sacked quarterback Sean Glennon and caused him to fumble. Georgia Tech’s Gary Guyton scooped up the ball and returned it for a touchdown and a 31-13 lead.

The Jackets defense held the Hokies to just 42 yards rushing. The win, Tech’s third road victory over a Top 15 team in the last 13 months, puts the Jackets atop the ACC Coastal Division standings as the only team without a conference loss.

Wheeler leads the ACC in tackles for loss with 8.5 and shares the conference lead with four sacks.

Chind, a senior from Cartersville, Ga., placed seventh overall at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic to help Tech to a first place finish amongst 31 teams. Chind ran a career-best 18:01.20 in the 5K race. She was the top finisher for the Yellow Jackets and one of three Tech women to place in the top 10.

The Georgia Tech women’s cross country team is currently ranked sixth in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region poll.
