ATLANTA – Junior Monique Mead had 22 kills and six digs as the Georgia Tech Volleyball team (6-2) beat Mercer (1-8) 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 28-26) Saturday afternoon at O’Keefe Gym. The Yellow Jackets will now play Samford tonight at 7 p.m. to close out the Regency Suites Invitational.
Mead hit .333 for the match as she went over 20 kills for the second time this season. Tech hit .283 as a team while Mercer hit .171. Sophomore Jennifer Percy had nine kills on .316 hitting while senior Asia Stawicka added five. Sophomore Kaleigh Colson had 25 assists and five digs in two sets and freshman Ali Santi dished out 14 assists in one set of work.
Juniors Susan Carlson and Nicki Meyer led Tech with seven digs.
Mercer scored four of the first five points in the opening set but it was all Georgia Tech after that. Tech opened up an 18-9 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-15 win. Mead hit .556 in the first set and led Tech with six kills. Percy added three for the Jackets as they hit .423 as a team.
In the second set, Mercer again got out to a quick start at 5-2. The Yellow Jackets came back to take the lead and then the teams went back and forth. Tech used a mini 4-0 run to open up a 17-14 lead but Mercer hung around. The Bears eventually came back from a 23-21 deficit to tie the set at 24 but Tech won the final two points to win 26-24 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Tech hit .300 in the set and was led again by Mead as she had seven kills. Percy added four as well for the Jackets.
Mercer led the third set 24-21 and looked like it was going to force a third set but the Jackets came charging back. Tech tied it at 24 before the Bears had set point. The Jackets won the next two but Mercer fought back to tie it at 26. Tech came back to win the final two points and secured the sweep with a 28-26 win. Mead had nine kills in the final set but Tech hit just .175.
