Volleyball Set To Open 2011 Season With Courtyard Marriott Classic

ATLANTA – The 2011 volleyball season gets underway this weekend at Georgia Tech hosts the Courtyard Marriott Classic at O’Keefe Gym. The tournament gets underway at 4:30 p.m. on Friday as Tennessee Tech takes on Louisville. The Yellow Jackets will then play Kansas State at 7 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets return all but two letterwinners from last season’s 18-14 team that went 11-9 and finished tied for fifth in the ACC. Tech was just picked fifth in the ACC preseason poll by the league’s coaches, while senior Bailey Hunter and junior Monique Mead earned preseason All-ACC recognition.

Live Coverage: Georgia Tech All-Access will provide video for all six matches this weekend free of charge. This weekend is a free preview and fans will need to pay a fee for the remainder of the season.

All Georgia Tech home matches will be broadcast on WREK, 91.1 FM in Atlanta and online at RamblinWreck.com. Veteran play-by-play announcer Kurt Hoyt will be joined by former Yellow Jacket Brittany Roderick. Live stats will also be available at RamblinWreck.com.

Parking Info: Fans arriving prior to 5 p.m. on Friday will be able to park on Fowler Street between 8th and 10th street as well as in the Alexander Memorial Coliseum lot. After 5 p.m., parking will be available in the O’Keefe lot as well as the Peter’s Parking Deck. Please not due to construction, 8th street will be down to one lane so expect delays.

All of those lots will be available to volleyball fans on Saturday.

The Courtyard Field: Georgia Tech is 1-1 all-time against Kansas State after dropping a three-set match in Manhattan, Kan. last year. The Wildcasts went 12-19 last season and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in eight years.

Tech is also 1-1 all-time against Louisville with the last match being a Jacket win back in 2002. Picked to win the Big East, the Cardinals are coming off a 23-8 season where they won the Big East Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Jackets are 4-6 all-time against Tennessee Tech and the two teams have not met since 2004, a Tech win. Last year, the Golden Eagles went 11-20.
