Volleyball Inks Two During Early Signing Period

Nov. 12, 2009

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech Volleyball Head Coach Tonya Johnson has announced that Quinn Evans (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights HS) and Jennifer Percy (Mobile, Ala./St. Paul’s Episcopal School) have each signed national letters of intent during the early signing period and will enroll at Georgia Tech in the fall.

“We are very excited about our first recruiting class here at Georgia Tech,” said Johnson. “Quinn and Jennifer are both great young ladies who will represent Georgia Tech well both on the court and in the classroom. We’re excited to have them become apart our family and look forward to both of them having great careers here at Georgia Tech.”

Evans is a 6-3 middle blocker who was on the prepvolleyball.com list of “Senior Aces.” In 2007 and 2008, Evans led the team in both blocks and kill percentage while helping to win a district championship in 2007. In 2006, she became the first freshman in school history to earn a varsity letter in volleyball and went on to be a four-year starter and two-time team captain.

Most awards for 2009 have not been released yet, but Evans is a two-time, first-team all-district pick and 2008 all-state and academic all-district selection. She was on the “Soph 79” and “Frosh 59” teams by prepvolleyball.com and has been a three-time San Antonio Express “High School Player to Watch.” In 2007, she had the third highest kills percentage (.431) of any player in the San Antonio area and was invited to the USA Volleyball High Performance Developmental Camp.

Evans has played with the Alamo Kaepa club team and as team captain last season helped lead team to 15th-place finish at nationals. She has also lettered in basketball and excelled in classroom having been on the honor roll all four years and two-time member of the National Honors Society.

“Quinn will certainly add size and depth to our middle blocker position,” added Johnson. “She has great lateral foot speed, does some really natural things blocking and does a nice job offensively behind the setter.”

Percy is a 6-1.5 outside hitter who is ranked 69th on the prepvolleyball.com list of “Senior Aces.” She led her team to three state championships and a trip to the championship game in 2009 where she had 21 kills and 10 digs. Percy has been an all-state pick four times, including first-team in each of the last two years. She was MVP of the South team in the 2009 Alabama North-South All-Star game and is a four-time state all-tournament, all-county and Area Super 12 teams (three on first-team).

Percy is also a decorated swimmer and has been a two-time all-state and all-county performer. She made the 2008 USA Volleyball Junior A1 camp and has played her club ball with Club Bomba. Percy has been a member of the Dean’s List and intends to major in industrial design.

“Jennifer is very athletic and with hard work should develop as one of the top outside hitters in the ACC,” said Johnson. “She hits a heavy ball, moves the ball around well and adds more physicality to our outside hitting position.”
